PROJECT WU-TANG CLAN

By Apprising Ministries special correspondent Justin Edwards of airō

Our next project is this Saturday, September 17, as we take the Gospel to the fans of the infamous Wu-tang Clan as they perform with Mobb Deep at The Fillmore, a venue at the NC Music Factory in Charlotte, NC. Several of us at The Speak:Truth Project used to be consumed by the music and wayward philosophies of groups like “the Wu”.

As captivating and seemingly truth-revealing as their lyrics were, it turns out they were heavily influenced and promoted a false religion known as The Nation of Gods and Earths, or Five Percent Nation (Five Percenters).

Other hip-hop artists associated with these teachings include Gravediggaz, Killarmy, Busta-Rhymes, NAS, Digable Planets, and Erykah Badu. Although having come out of that music culture and realizing these philosophies were false, I had no idea they were rooted in this Nation of Gods and Earths religion.

I was so deceived and thought these artists were so tuned in to the truth as I consumed various mind-altering drugs as a young adult. I was sucked right in to believe their clever lyrics and was living far from reality. While I was caught up in this scene, I would have told you it was just music, but looking back, it was a a way of life.

We believe many of the folks we’ll be engaging this Saturday will have a similar background, which is why we decided to produce a Gospel tract specific for this event. As it turns out, Matt “Crucial” Slyman will be releasing a new Christian hip-hop album titled The Hard Truth on October 7, 2011, so we took advantage to get knowledge of his album accompanied with a Gospel message into the hands of the Wu-tang fans. While I can’t share the unreleased album cover with you, you can check out the back of the tract below (we hope to offer you this tract with a different front side in the near future).

We’ll also be distributing music by Lampmode in an effort to introduce biblical truth to these fans. I remember thinking when I first listened to artists such as Shai Linne that my former favorites’ content could not touch the God-glorifying truths found in the lyrics of some Christian hip-hop artists. We’re praying these Gospel tracts and CDs will be an excellent transition to reach this lost culture.

If you would like to join us on this mission to glorify God and make Christ known, especially if you can relate to this hip-hop community, please contact us for more details. We will be out there around 6pm until 11pm or so and it will involve distributing material and one-on-one witnessing.

The front of the Gospel tract leads into the back with “EVERYONE WANTS TO KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT…”

The original appears complete with a comments section right here.
