CROSSTALK: BOB DEWAAY ON WARRENGATE AND JOHN PIPER

You’re likely aware that Dr. John Piper opened up Warrengate when he made a mistake by inviting Purpose Driven Pope Rick Warren to be a keynote speaker at the Desiring God Conference 2010. Here Apprising Ministries is pleased to remind you about a book called Redefining Christianity: Understanding the Purpose-Driven Movement by pastor Bob DeWaay, Senior Pastor of Twin City Fellowship.

In my mind this is one of the very best resources refuting the man-centered pragmatism and hostile take-over tactics of Warrenism and the Product Description over at Amazon us dead-in-target:

The author of this book examines The Purpose Driven Church, The Purpose Driven Life, and the business system that Rick Warren has developed to promote it around the world. He looks carefully at his claims, his use of scripture, his integration of human wisdom with scripture, and his ability to get thousands of pastors to convert from expository Bible preaching to being Purpose Driven.

In the end he compares Rick Warren’s version of “church health” with that of Jesus Christ. The reader will see how Rick Warren has indeed redefined Christianity. (Online source)

Now I’m pleased to refer you to the Crosstalk program, hosted by Ingrid Schlueter, and which featured pastor DeWaay on Warrengate and what DeWaay calls the “file cabinet orthodoxy” of Rick Warren. DeWaay explains:

You stick it in a file cabinet, and someone questions you about it, you pull it and show [it to] them. Then you put it back in there; but it really doesn’t influence what you do, how you write, how you preach, how you speak. And it’s not very useful orthodoxy.

From the Crosstalk website:

Ingrid reported that Pastor John Piper encountered “Purpose-Driven” Pastor Rick Warren at a funeral and their meeting resulted in a phone call. The result is that last week Pastor Piper sent shock waves through the Christian community after announcing that he was inviting Rick Warren to be one of the speakers at the 2010 Desiring God Conference.

As Pastor DeWaay explains, “Orthodoxy” has to do with what you believe and what you’re willing to say you believe, at least in private. “Orthopraxy”, on the other hand, has to do with what you actually practice. As this program proves, Rick Warren, while he may have affirmed orthodox principles to John Piper, has a public record of proclaiming something very different. Ingrid and Pastor DeWaay expose this tension through various sources such as Warren’s own peace plan, an audio clip by John MacArthur on Warren’s omission of repentance, and much more.
