AM MAILBAG: HAUGHTY TONE OR BLUNT TRUTH?

As this apostasy grows I have done my part. In the interest of saving time I present the following unsolicited email. If you are among the growing number who feel as the AM Critic below, then you now know what my response will be. Here I stand, the Lord’s will be done; no matter what, to the end…

As a follower of Christ I understand the necessity of discernment in our world whether it is from within the Church herself, or of the world. What I don’t understand is the tone of the articles I find in the website. Whether or not I agree with the viewpoint, I find myself wanting to disassociate from Christians whose comments are sardonic in nature. I think we can disagree with other believers and their viewpoints without a haughty tone. I don’t think that fosters anything but pride and bitterness. I am just curious why the writers on this website use sarcasm as one way to relay their message. I can’t help feeling it is counterproductive to your goal.

Sincerely,
AM Critic

Hello AM Critic,

Thank you for contacting Apprising Ministries. The noted Christian philosopher and apologist Dr. Francis Schaeffer used to say: “Honest questions deserve honest answers.” I believe this as well and so I will respond from a position of no offense taken and no intention of causing any. Setting this upfront due to the limitations of the written language.

You say: “I don’t understand is the tone of the articles I find in the website.” You didn’t specify which articles you refer to among over a thousand but my guess would be you mean current ones concerning Quaker mystic Richard Foster.

You will find this helpful in understanding my labors in the Lord do extend well beyond the Apprising Ministries website: https://www.apprising.org/about-2/

You also mentioned: “Whether or not I agree with the viewpoint, I find myself wanting to disassociate from Christians whose comments are sardonic in nature.” Well, that’s certainly your prerogative but I don’t really think it’s a wise course of action because the possibility exists you may indeed miss some vital information.

Then you say: “I think we can disagree with other believers and their viewpoints without a haughty tone. I don’t think that fosters anything but pride and bitterness.” O, I quite agree; however, when you imply that my tone is “haughty” I believe you are guilty of a false judgment because this is not my attitude at all. I personally hate conflict.

Finally you said: “I am just curious why the writers on this website use sarcasm as one way to relay their message. I can’t help feeling it is counterproductive to your goal.” That would be writer, singular, and sarcasm is actually a powerful tool in conveying ideas; especially so in this day. You may also wish to examine e.g. Elijah on Mount Carmel.

And being that I happen to be a pastor-teacher who was quite literally given these websites, which I never asked for, what makes you so sure that I have a “goal” of my own? The truth is, I don’t have any goals other than to do my best to try and accomplish whatever Jesus asks me to do; to keep my nose clean, and then to get out of this world having done so.

May the Lord open your eyes AM Critic that you might see the dark red sky this morning and recognize the time in which you live. I am afraid this is only the beginning and should the Lord tarry things are going to get mighty rough spiritually in the days ahead.

You may believe me when I tell you that I sincerely wish I had better news.

For Christ’s honor I labor,
