AN EMERGING CHURCH "PASTOR" ON FAITH, CERTAINTY, AND TAKING CLUES FROM TOM CRUISE

…always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
(2 Timothy 3:7)

Having recently been called a “little barking poodle” by emerging church pastor Dan Kimball (take a look around his blog and have your eyes opened), let me begin this short piece at Apprising Ministries by saying: “Yap, Yap.” Hey Dan, do you remember an old saying-even older than your rock-a-billy music-um, I dunno…something about “sleeping dogs.” :-)

Now the following post from the website OneHandClapping is very insightful in showing the root rebellion inherent in the neo-liberal cult of the Emergent Church. The author Julie Clawson happens to be a “pastor” of an emerging church along with her husband Mike Clawson who is one quite upset about posters produced by Pyromaniacs that seemed to hit a little bit too close to home.

“Pastor” Julie tentatively—ever so careful to avoid certainty—speculates:

Now as the idea of certainty or absolute knowledge seems so utterly impossible I laugh at my arrogance in assuming I could ever grasp them. But it was a long journey to move to that point. My grip on certainty held me tighter than my grip on Christianity itself. I couldn’t tell if I was more afraid to give up my philosophical system (which defined my religion) than I was to question my faith itself.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: It is not that we don’t know for certain what God has said to mankind in regard to salvation and how to live in this world  (e.g. 2 Corinthians 4:1-5). No, what we have is a generation who is emerging [read: rebelling] away from what God says in His Word on those subjects simply because they don’t happen to like what the real Christ of the Bible has said.

Ah, which is exactly what one of those posters of satire suggests…
