MYSTICAL ENCOUNTERS FOR CHRISTIANS

"When I sensed that believing in Jesus wasn't enough and yearned for more, I turned to older forms of prayer." Tony Campolo

Would you like to get a look at the kind of "spirituality" that your pastors received at Zondervan's NPC 2006? In this Beliefnet article Emergent prophet Tony Campolo shares some insight gleaned from his experience in transcendental meditation: "during times of reflection I sensed that believing in Jesus and living out His teachings just wasn't enough. There was a yearning for something more..."

And as more and more in the Emerging Church head deeper into the neo-pagan Gnostic mysticism of contemplative spirituality they will join Campolo as he says the Name of Jesus: "over and over again, for as long as fifteen minutes, until I find my soul suspended in what the ancient Celtic Christians called a 'thin place'--a state where the boundary between heaven and earth, divine and human, dissolves. You could say that I use the name of Jesus as my koan."

The Emergent prophet also informs us: "When I am asked how I know that such mystical infillings of the Holy Spirit aren't the result of simple 'feel good' techniques that sometimes mark the ecstasies of New Age practitioners, I have an answer. I explain that these experiences generate within me an intensive passion for telling others about Jesus." Ah, but which Jesus are we telling them about there Tony?

Do you still think there's no spiritual danger in allowing this lunacy to be considered as evangelical Christianity? Then you'd better think again because this is what the Lord says: "Your prophets have seen for you false and deceptive visions; they have not exposed your iniquity to restore your fortunes, but have seen for you oracles that are false and misleading." (Lamentations 2:14)
